Program Design

POETIX employs a modular curriculum designed to make each workshop unique and valuable to any student population. The full program is 15 sessions, separated into independent Phases, each outlining specific skills for creating spoken-word poetry.

PHASE 1: The Written Word is devoted to the historicity, form & content, and practice of writing poetry for performance. From brainstorming and experimenting with literary devices, to crafting complete short-form poems, students leave with the tools and toys to work and play with poetic language!

PHASE 2: The Spoken Word outlines physical and vocal warm-ups as well as stylistic delivery techniques using rhythm, timing, and emphasis to move mere recitation of poetry into dynamic performance.

PHASE 3: The Digital Word captures the fine art of spoken-word through use of digital media. Through basic word processing and use of digital recording applications, students gain practical skills for creating print and audio media from their original work.
